Former IGP, Alkali, is in the race for Yobe Govt House

Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Usman Alkali, has joined the Yobe Government House candidacy to become state governor.

He said his decision to purchase nomination forms to enter the contest followed the failure of an earlier arrangement by his party, the All Progressives Congress to field candidates based on consensus.

The former police boss while speaking to journalists on Sunday in Damaturu, revealed that four other aspirants had pre-purchased nomination forms, signaling the failure of an earlier agreement aimed at producing a consensus candidate.

“Therefore, I obtained a form to join this movement. No one ever showed me where to sign or even asked me to speak,” Alkali said.

He added that the development confirmed that the consensus agreement among the candidates had failed.

He explained that his understanding of the party consensus model was based on a voluntary agreement among candidates to support a single candidate.

“That is the meaning of consensus. Now that this is not happening in Yobe, I have decided to continue with my ambitions,” he said.

The former police chief said he arrived in Damaturu at the weekend to verify the validity of his nomination form.

According to him, he also consulted party guidelines and relevant stakeholders before proceeding.

Regarding whether he would resign if the party leadership asked him to support another candidate, Alkali said it depended on existing conditions.

“I will, if I agree to the terms,” he said.

He urged his supporters to remain steadfast and committed throughout the primary process, by standing by him regardless of whether the primary takes place as scheduled or not.
