By Abayomi Ademola

Sporting Lagos FC kicked off their 2026 Nigerian National League Super Four campaign with a tough 1-0 win over Ranchers Bees FC at the Remo Stars Stadium.

The match was decided in the 40th minute when Alex Leme headed in a well-worked attacking move involving Seun Akanji and Shola Oladunjoye. Sporting Lagos dominated the opening minutes and created several chances, but had to be patient before finally defeating the disciplined Ranchers Bees defense.

The Ranchers Bees showed greater urgency after the restart in search of an equaliser, but Sporting Lagos maintained their defensive form to see out the match and secure maximum points in their first match of the tournament.

Akanji, who assisted the winning goal, was named Man of the Match and praised the collective effort of his teammates. The result puts Sporting Lagos in a strong starting position as they continue their fight for promotion.

Meanwhile, Éric Chelle was present at the match, who also presented the man of the match award, marking the second domestic match he has seen in recent days as he intensifies the search for grassroots talent ahead of the 2026 Unity Cup.

The Super Eagles coach has indicated his intention to identify and include prominent players from national and domestic competitions, and his squad list is expected to be forthcoming.
