With three games remaining, the Gunners need to win to stay five points clear of second-placed Manchester City, who have one game in hand.
The Hammers kept the game scoreless until the 83rd minute when Leandro Trossard broke the deadlock.

The hosts thought they had taken a point from the game when Callum Wilson scored, but the goal was ultimately disallowed after VAR confirmed a foul on David Raya.
It was a controversial end to the game, but Arsenal have picked up three vital points in the title race, and are within striking distance of winning the Premier League.
Arsenal have two more games, against Burnley and Crystal Palace – on the final day. West Ham are in the bottom three.
In other Premier League matches played on Sunday, Nottingham Forest drew 1-1 with Newcastle United; Crystal Palace drew 2-2 with Everton; and Burnley also held Aston Villa 2-2.
