Finidi praises Rivers United victory at Wikki Tourists

Rivers United technical advisor Finidi George has reflected on his team’s hard-earned away victory over Wikki Tourists.

The Port Harcourt club defeated their hosts 3-2 in a thrilling matchday 37 encounter of the Nigeria Premier Football League, NPFL, at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Stadium, Bauchi, on Sunday.

The victory put Rivers United in a strong position to clinch the title heading into their final game of the season against Katsina United this weekend.

Finidi’s team are in second position, one point behind Rangers who defeated Bendel Insurance 2-1 in Enugu on Sunday.

The Rangers will travel to Ikorodu town on the final day of the campaign.

Hard meeting in Bauchi

Jonathan Mairiga opened the scoring for Wikki Tourists in the 21st minute, before Rivers United equalized in the 34th minute through Handsome Surveyor.

Wikki Tourists regained the lead moments after the restart, with a goal from Imamu Bala in the 47th minute.

Rivers United kept the pressure on and their efforts were rewarded in the 59th minute when Chijioke Mbaoma calmly scored the equaliser.

Taofeek Otaniyi scored the winning goal for the visitors with five minutes remaining.

Finidi greets the players

Finidi praised his players for their fighting spirit throughout the match.

“It was a difficult match because we have to come back twice to finally win the match,” Finidi said in his post-match interview.

“I must congratulate my boys for doing this in Bauchi. Winning in front of the home fans was difficult.

“We will return home to win our home game (against Katsina United) and leave the rest to what happens in other centres.”
