MONROVIA, May 18, 2026 – Liberia’s General Auditing Commission (GAC), headed by Auditor General P. Garswa Jackson, Sr., is set to host a weeklong regional conference beginning Monday, May 18, 2026, bringing together 26 Auditors General from across Africa for the first such gathering in the country since the body’s formation.
The meeting, organized under the auspices of the African Organization of English-speaking Supreme Audit Institutions (AFROSAI-E) and hosted by SAI Liberia, will run from Monday, May 18, to Friday, May 22, 2026, at two venues in Monrovia.
AFROSAI-E is a regional bloc of 26 English-speaking African countries established to strengthen the capacity and independence of Supreme Audit Institutions and improve accountability in public finance management.
According to organizers, the annual conference is intended to meet statutory requirements, assess progress under the 2025–2029 Strategic Plan, and deepen cooperation and peer support among member institutions.
Auditor General Jackson said the gathering will focus on strengthening public-sector auditing, improving transparency, and expanding the use of data and technology across audit institutions across the continent. He said Liberia’s hosting of the meeting reflects the country’s commitment to accountability and international best practices in public financial management.
“This is an opportunity to showcase Liberia’s progress in audit reform and to learn from our peers across Africa,” Jackson said, noting that strong audit institutions remain central to good governance.
Expected guests include officials from the Swedish National Audit Office, the Norwegian Audit Office, the World Bank, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the International Monetary Fund, and other AFROSAI-E partners.
Jackson said invitations were also extended to Liberia’s anti-graft institutions, the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning, and senior officials in the Executive and Legislative branches.
The program will include a two-day Governing Board Meeting at a local hotel in Monrovia and a two-day Strategic Review Meeting at the Ministerial Complex, with panel discussions on key audit-related issues.
Former President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and former Finance and Development Planning Minister Dr. Antoinette Sayeh are expected to deliver papers at the event. Organizers say the opening session will draw more than 100 international and local guests, with remarks expected from Jackson, the AFROSAI-E Chairperson, and Kenyan Auditor General Nancy Gathungu, as well as President Joseph Boakai, on transparency and accountability in government.
The conference will conclude on Friday, May 22, with an excursion to the Marshall area, where delegates are expected to experience part of Liberia’s natural environment.
At the end of the deliberations, delegates are expected to:
- Adopt resolutions on the 2025–2029 Strategic Plan
- Strengthen regional audit cooperation and peer support
- Commit to measurable improvements in SAI independence and public finance oversight
- Issue a joint communiqué aligned with AU Agenda 2063
