
Peter Obi, presumptive presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) and former governor of Anambra State, has condemned the recent killing of a teacher and the rape and murder of an elderly woman, describing the incidents as “disconcerting” and symptomatic of deeper social decay.

How did we get to the point where teachers are targeted and killed and elders, custodians of memory and wisdom, are subjected to such dehumanizing violence?
“This goes beyond a security failure. It is a collapse of our common humanity. We have become desensitized, absorbing the tragedy briefly before moving on, and allowing indifference to make the unacceptable seem normal.
“To the affected families, I share your pain, but pain alone is not enough.
“We must demand accountability and urgent, systemic change. If atrocities of this nature no longer compel us to act, then we risk losing the very humanity that binds us as a nation.”
