The Anambra State Government on Friday arraigned eight clerics before an Awka court for alleged violations of the state’s national security law.

The accused, arrested in Onitsha, Awka and other areas, were produced before the court at the State Judicial Complex. Prosecutors said their activities violated provisions of the law enacted in February 2025.

The accused are Peter Chukwu, Chinedu Egwuonwu, Bishop Emeka Nwankpa, Ebele Nnachukwu, Ekeleme Chris Ugochukwu, Ndubisi Nnachukwu, Miracle Iruoma and Chukwukadibia Ogwuama.

A media aide to the governor, Ejimofor Opara, said the suspects were described as “false herdsmen” and accused of practices the government links to fraudulent wealth acquisition schemes prohibited by law.

Announcement

The national security law targets activities considered harmful to public order. The government said the action follows previous prosecutions of Native doctors accused of promoting illicit get-rich-quick schemes, with some convictions already secured.

The Anambra Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice is leading the charge. The court adjourned the matter for further hearing.
