Kano is attempting to screen 3,000 potential couples ahead of a state-sponsored mass wedding

Preparations for the planned mass wedding program in Kano State have entered a critical phase, with authorities set to begin comprehensive health screening of 3,000 prospective brides and grooms in 24 local government areas.

The Kano State Hisbah Council confirmed that the exercise will begin on Monday as part of the requirements to participate in the government-backed marriage initiative.

Speaking in a telephone interview on Sunday, the council’s Deputy Commander General, Sheikh Mujahedeen Aminudeen, revealed that arrangements had been finalized to ensure a smooth screening process.

“God willing, the examination will start on Monday, June 8 2026. Couples consisting of 1,500 women and 1,500 men will undergo mandatory examinations to ensure their health status,” he said.

According to Aminudeen, the exercise will be carried out in the Rogo, Wudil, Tudun Wada, Warawa, Kibiya, Dawakin Tofa, Garun Malam, Kura, Dambatta, Karaye, Tsanyawa, Minjibir, Rimin Gado, Shanono, Kabo, Tofa, Rano, Bebeji, Ajingi, Gwarzo, Sumaila, Kiru, Takai and Madobi local government areas.

The screening program was implemented through a partnership involving the Hisbah Council, Kano State Ministry of Health and the State AIDS Control Agency.

Officials said participants will be tested for HIV/AIDS, hepatitis B, genotype compatibility, drug abuse and various sexually transmitted infections, including gonorrhea, in an effort to safeguard the health and well-being of couples taking the test.

Aminudeen revealed that all registered participants have been directed to report to Hisbah offices in their respective local government areas to undertake the exercise, and warned that attendance is mandatory to continue participating in the scheme.

“After that, only those who pass the health examination will be eligible,” Aminudeen added.

The mass marriage initiative was revived by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s administration as part of broader social intervention measures aimed at supporting marriage among low-income families and addressing social challenges affecting the younger generation across the state.

Government officials say the program is intended to provide assistance to eligible couples whose families may be unable to bear the financial burden associated with a wedding ceremony, while improving social stability and family development.

The latest exercise is expected to pave the way for the next phase of the mass marriage programme, which has become one of the major social welfare initiatives in the state.
