Chidiebere Nwobodo’s header after a corner kick. Rangers won the NPFL, 2-1 over Ikorodu City, ninth title for the club with 68 points. Goal from a set piece. Rehearsed movement, directed shot, free header to the far post. Corner statistics in football, greyhound racing odds On a midweek card, whatever sport you’re following, 2025-26 continued to show the same thing. First League? 25% of goals from set pieces was 20.6% last year. NPFL? 1.97 goals per game, compared to 2.06.
Remo Stars won the title and then lost the team
Daniel Ogunmodede’s Remo Stars won the 2024-25 NPFL. First title in the club’s history. All the fans expected a dynasty, or at least a decent run to win the trophy. During the summer, 85% of the players left. Higher salaries elsewhere, offers from continental football, the usual reasons. The Academy has been producing talent for years – one graduate ended up at Inter Milan in 2023 – but a full first eleven cannot be rebuilt through the youth set-up in a single window.
New signings arrived, they took months to come together, and months is exactly what the schedule doesn’t give you. In the middle of the season the results were going badly and the table did not lie about where the club was. Last matchday, Bendel Insurance at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, three points needed. Drawing. Kun Khalifat won his match that same afternoon. The defending champions moved to the second level.
When a league averages 1.97 goals per game, set pieces become the most reliable scoring method. One corner, one free header, one goal and you’ve probably won. Remo Stars started the season with a new team that hadn’t trained together long enough to execute rehearsed corner moves, and you could see it in how they attacked set pieces all year long, hurried, uncoordinated, with no one quite sure where to stand.
Four coaches in Enyimba in one season
Nine titles. The biggest club in NPFL history. And Enyimba spent the 2025-26 season near the bottom of the table with a different coach seemingly every few weeks. The most experienced was replaced after a bad run of results, an interim came in and in January a permanent signing arrived who had to learn the squad from scratch when it was already halfway through the season. There was also a disagreement between the president and the state government over who makes decisions, apart from players with pending assignments and a restriction on stadiums that moved home games to venues without Enyimba supporters. The atmosphere in those games was unpleasant, home games without local support.
They let 22 players go before the season. The president’s stated goal was the title. The season was completely different.
You need weeks to create set-piece routines. Scout each upcoming opponent on video, design specific corner moves to exploit their positioning, practice those moves until players let them cool down. A coach who joins in January enters a group without any of that. The January event in Enyimba had to start from scratch with a squad that was not chosen, in the middle of a season that was already going sideways.
The Rangers had stability and they showed it
Fidelis Ilechukwu coached the Rangers throughout the season. Two NPFL titles with the club now. Rivers United relied on former Super Eagles coach Finidi George throughout the campaign.
