Monrovia, June 11, 2026: Opposition political parties are quietly discussing possible alliances ahead of the 2029 presidential election in a bid to mount a stronger challenge to President Joseph Boakai’s anticipated re-election campaign.
The disclosure was made by Movement for Progressive Change (MPC) Political Leader Simeon Freeman during an appearance on a local FM Station, where he acknowledged the difficulties of challenging an incumbent president.
Freeman said opposition parties recognize that defeating a sitting president with access to state resources will require collaboration among key political actors.
“We are fully aware that going against a sitting president who has access to the central bank and wants to print 7.9 billion LRD will not be easy.”
According to him, discussions are already taking place behind the scenes to structure relationships and potential alliances that could strengthen the opposition’s chances in the 2029 polls.
He argued that if major opposition parties unite and apply coordinated political pressure, President Boakai’s chances of securing another term would be significantly reduced.
“We know that defeating the president will not be a matter of 200 political parties going against him. We are fully aware of that, so we are talking to each other and there will be some level of collaboration—probably not complete, but there will be some,” Freeman said.
Freeman also outlined reasons why he believes Liberians should elect a new leadership in 2029, claiming that the current administration has failed to fulfill many of its promises to the Liberian people.
He pointed to what he described as policy failures, the government’s handling of public transportation, and the appointment of what he termed inexperienced and incapable officials to key positions.
“The public is seeing that what the government said and what the government is doing are two different things, and there is a big gap,” Freeman said.
Referring to the government’s acquisition of public buses, he questioned whether the initiative would significantly ease the economic burden on ordinary Liberians.
“Do you think the people care if the president brings a few buses into the country and rides around in them as if that will solve their problems? Are the buses free? Won’t people have to pay to ride them? I don’t know who advised him to get in and ride around,” he added.
Freeman maintained that opposition parties will continue to engage with one another to build collaborative arrangements capable of unseating the Unity Party-led government in the 2029 presidential election.
