History was made as South Africa reached the knockout stages of the World Cup for the first time

South Africa’s Bafana Bafana have secured their place in the last 32 of the ongoing World Cup after beating South Korea 1-0 in their final Group A match on Thursday morning.

Thapelo Maseko scored the only goal of the match with a shot in the 63rd minute, which was ultimately enough for them to finish as group runners-up.

South Korea finished third with three points from a win, and will need results elsewhere to reach the last 32.

Mexico beat South Africa 2-0 in their opener, and then beat South Korea before beating the Czech Republic 3-0 to top Group A.

Mateo Chavez, Julian Quinones and Alvaro Fidalgo scored Mexico’s goals to knock the Czech Republic, who finished bottom of the group with one point, out of the tournament.
