The Nigerian U-23 centre-back signs for Swiss Giants FC Basel

19-year-old Nigerian defender Akpe Victory has completed his move to Swiss giants FC Basel from Hungarian side Zalaegerszeg, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.

The giants defender arrived on a free transfer from Lithuanian side Banga last summer and in just one season emerged as one of the most sought-after players in the Hungarian league.

Three teams – Scottish giants Rangers, Portuguese powerhouse Benfica and Turkish side Trabzonspor – were linked with a move for him, but FC Basel won the race for his signature.

Chosen in the list of foreign under-23 players by the head coach of the Nigerian senior team, who also serves as coach of the under-23 team. He is expected to be a central element of the team fighting to qualify Nigeria for the Olympic football event for the first time since 2016.

He signed a five-year contract with an option for a further year and will join the team’s pre-season camp for next season, where they will play in the UEFA Champions League and also look to defend their league title.
