The Federal Government has approved a new registration fee of N50,000 for candidates hoping to sit for the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and National Examinations Council (NECO) Senior School Certificate Examinations (SSCE) examinations, with effect from 2027.
The new fee represents an increase of about 82% from the current registration fee of N27,500.
The approval is contained in a statement signed by the Director of Higher Secondary Education in the Federal Ministry of Education, Adeniji Ibrahim.
According to the statement, the decision followed a meeting between the examination bodies and the Minister of Education on March 31, 2026, in which the need to review examination fees was discussed.
He said the minister had instructed both WAEC and NECO to adopt a uniform fee scale for the conduct of their senior school certificate examinations.
The ministry also ordered that the decision be communicated to all interested parties.
“You may recall that in an examination bodies meeting held with the Honorable Minister of Education on 31 March 2026, where the need for an upward revision of examination fees was discussed, the Honorable Minister directed that WAEC and NECO adopt a uniform fee for the conduct of WAEC and NECO SSCE.
“Accordingly, I am hereby directed to convey to the Honorable Minister of Education the approval of the sum of Fifty Thousand Naira (N50,000.00), as new examination fee per candidate, with effect from NECO SSCE (Internal), 2027,” the statement read.
Confirming the development on Saturday, the ministry’s Director of Press and Public Relations, Folasade Boriowo, said the Federal Government had approved the upward revision of examination fees.
“I can confirm the approval of an upward revision of exam fees. I spoke to the director in charge a few minutes ago and he said the approval has been made,” he said.
