Babcock uses drone surveillance to increase campus security amid growing insecurity

Babcock University, Ilishan-Remo, Ogun State, has launched a drone surveillance system as part of measures to beef up security on its campus and nearby communities amid growing security concerns across the country.

The institution said the initiative, executed in partnership with information technology company New Horizon, will provide aerial surveillance extending up to a radius of 30 kilometers beyond the university, improving the safety of students, staff and residents of the surrounding communities.

Speaking during the inauguration of the security infrastructure in the main campus of the university, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Afolarin Ojewole, said the institution remains committed to protecting lives and property by maintaining an environment conducive to learning.

He noted that the university’s responsibility goes beyond academic excellence and ensuring the safety and well-being of its community members.

According to him, the drone surveillance project is designed not only to secure the university, but also to contribute to the safety of nearby communities.

“Babcock cares not just about academics, but about character and safety. As we watch over our own, we also care about those around our community so that together we can have an ecosystem where people can sleep soundly at night,” Ojewole said.

The vice-chancellor revealed that the university plans to procure two additional drones to expand surveillance coverage and improve emergency response capabilities.

He also revealed that discussions were underway to incorporate drone technology and robotics into the institute’s academic programs to provide students with practical skills in emerging technologies.

New Horizon CEO and CEO Tim Akano described the drone donation as another milestone in the long-standing relationship between the two organizations.

Akano said the partnership, which has spanned more than 22 years, has continued to provide value to both institutions.

He explained that the newly deployed drone is capable of flying at an altitude of up to 7,000 feet, providing real-time aerial imagery and clear night vision to support a rapid security response.

“We are pleased to donate this drone to Babcock University to further strengthen its security architecture. This partnership has spanned over two decades and we believe the university has the ability to maximize the technology,” he said.

Akano added that the collaboration also includes training university staff in the operation, maintenance and repairs of the drones to ensure the sustainability of the project.

The launch ceremony was attended by representatives of the Nigeria Police Force from Ilishan Division, led by the Divisional Police Officer, CSP Betty Ajuwon, officials of the Ilishan Development Association and members of the university management.

The university said the initiative reflects its commitment to leveraging modern technology to address evolving security challenges, while promoting a safer learning environment for students and the host community.
