Nigeria qualifies for 2026 African Cup of Nations in the Democratic Republic of the Congo

Nigeria has qualified for the 2026 Africa Cup of Nations finals in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, from September 7 to 21.

Team Nigeria defeated Benin 3-1 in the ongoing Zone 3 Qualifiers in Abidjan, Ivory Coast on Friday, July 17.

The Nigerian team secured its place in the continental championship, scheduled for September 7-21, with a hard-fought 3-1 victory over neighboring Benin Republic on Friday.

Benin Republic took the first set 25-21 in a tense match marked by controversial refereeing. However, Nigeria responded strongly to level the match by taking the second set 25-21.

The Nigerians maintained their momentum to dominate the remaining sets 25-15 and 25-20, sealing an impressive comeback.

The result gave Benin Republic its first defeat of the tournament and extended Nigeria’s unbeaten streak to four. Nigeria had previously defeated Niger Republic 3-1, Ivory Coast 3-0 and Togo 3-1.

The President of the Nigerian Volleyball Federation (NVBF), Engineer Musa Nimrod, has expressed satisfaction with the progress of volleyball in the country.

“We are delighted with the steady growth of volleyball in Nigeria. Our recent qualification for the competition in Congo and our women’s team’s qualification for Kenya are clear signs that the sport is moving in the right direction.”

Nimrod revealed that preparations are already underway for the country’s U-19 men’s national team ahead of their competition in Egypt. He said:

“As we continue our journey, preparations are underway for our U-19 Men’s National Team ahead of their next competition in Egypt. We ask for your prayers and support as we work to overcome some remaining challenges. We are confident that everything will fall into place.”

He praised the media for their continued support in promoting the sport. He said:

“On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Nigerian Volleyball Federation, I sincerely thank you all for your unwavering support and the excellent coverage you have provided to our activities.

“His commitment to the promotion of volleyball in Nigeria has helped project the Federation in a positive light and we truly appreciate it.”

Nigeria will conclude its Zone 3 qualification campaign on Saturday with a match against Burkina Faso.
