The Kogi Police Command has recorded another operational success in its sustained offensive against kidnapping and other violent crimes with the neutralization of a suspected kidnapper and recovery of an Italian-made pump action gun during a joint security operation in Ayegunle Gbede, Ijumu Local Government Area.
Spokesperson for the command, ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat, said that “in the early hours of Friday, July 17, 2026, armed kidnappers invaded the residence of Abubakar Kabiru of Nila Forest Camp, Ayegunle Gbede, and took him away into the forest.
“Upon receiving the report, Divisional Police Officer Ayetoro Gbede, immediately mobilized a joint team comprising police officers, officers from the command’s Violent Crimes Response Unit (VCRU), personnel on special duty and local vigilantes to Olle-Bunu forest, where the officers engaged the kidnappers in a fierce gun duel. One suspect was neutralized, forcing the others to flee and abandon the victim, who is currently being treated for a gunshot wound sustained during the attack. accident.
“During the operation, the joint team recovered the dead body of the neutralized suspect along with an Italian-made pump action pistol with violation number 5882. The dead body was deposited at the Ayetoro Gbede General Hospital morgue, while the firearm was taken into custody by the police as an exhibit.
Following the developments, the Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi, commended the courage and professionalism of officers and local security partners, reaffirming the Command’s commitment to harnessing community policing to protect lives and property across the State.
He assured residents that efforts are underway to arrest fleeing suspects and dismantle the criminal network, while urging members of the public to continue to support the police with timely and credible information.
