An 18-year-old man in France has been placed under formal investigation over an alleged series of violent home invasions and kidnappings planned against wealthy individuals, including Real Madrid and France striker Kylian Mbappé.
According to the French newspaper Le Parisien, the suspect, identified as Clément L., was investigated together with an alleged accomplice on August 21 in Nanterre, Hauts-de-Seine, for organized robbery crimes. Project reports
Investigators believe the teenager was the alleged organizer behind a series of violent attacks and kidnapping plots carried out or in preparation between April 11 and August 19 in different parts of France.
Mbappé among the set objectives
Mbappé was reportedly one of 26 people identified as potential targets by the group.
The alleged targets reportedly included wealthy businessmen, a rapper and the Real Madrid striker, with the group suspected of planning the kidnapping and assault of some of those targeted.
The revelation has raised new concerns about the security risks faced by high-profile footballers in France and Europe, who have increasingly become targets of organized crime groups due to their wealth and public profile.
However, it does not appear from the report that Mbappé was actually attacked or that an attempt to kidnap him had already taken place.
The teenager allegedly ran a criminal network
Le Parisien reported that Clément L. is suspected of being the organizer of the criminal activities, as investigators link him to a series of assaults and attempted kidnappings.
The teenager was reportedly identified following the attack on a watchmaker in Neuilly-sur-Seine in April.
Investigators subsequently uncovered information that allegedly pointed to a larger criminal operation involving planned attacks against selected individuals.
The alleged crimes allegedly took place in Neuilly-sur-Seine, Saint-Brice-sous-Forêt in Val-d’Oise and Santenay in Côte-d’Or.
The suspect is already in prison
The development is particularly notable because the 18-year-old was already in custody for other serious crimes.
Le Parisien reported that Clément L. was serving a prison sentence in connection with organized robbery and pimping-related crimes before becoming the subject of the latest investigation.
Following the new proceedings, he was held in pre-trial detention and placed in solitary confinement, while his alleged accomplice was released under judicial supervision.
The teenager reportedly challenged his solitary confinement and continued detention in the Versailles Court of Appeal.
Investigations reveal larger plans
According to the report, investigators believe that the alleged criminal network was not focused on a single victim but had identified numerous potential targets.
The group reportedly targeted wealthy businessmen and public figures, with planned operations involving both robberies and kidnappings.
The investigation reportedly began after the April attack on a watchmaker and gradually expanded as police examined evidence linking the suspects to other criminal activity.
Authorities continue to investigate the extent of the network, the identity of other possible participants and the possible involvement of additional targets.
Football stars increasingly targeted
The alleged plot involving Mbappé comes against a backdrop of repeated criminal incidents involving professional footballers and their families in France.
Several high-profile players have previously been victims of home invasions or attempted burglaries, particularly in the Paris region.
Former Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma was the victim of a violent home invasion in Paris in 2023, while PSG captain Marquinhos’ family was also targeted in a home invasion in 2021.
More recently, Marseille defender Benjamin Pavard’s home was targeted in an attempted burglary in May 2026.
The incidents have highlighted the vulnerability of wealthy footballers, whose homes, lifestyles and movements can make them attractive targets for organized crime.
No attacks on Mbappé reported
Despite the seriousness of the alleged plan, it does not appear that Mbappé was physically attacked or that the alleged kidnappers reached his home.
The Real Madrid striker, who is also a French international, remains one of the most recognizable and valuable footballers in the world.
The investigation will now determine the precise role allegedly played by the teenager and his alleged accomplices, as well as the progress of their plans.
For now, the case remains an accusation and the suspect has the right to the presumption of innocence while French judicial authorities continue their investigations.
