NAPTAN elections remain suspended pending true reconciliation – Official

The scheduled national elections of the National Parent Teacher Association of Nigeria (NAPTAN) have been suspended indefinitely, following clear violations of the association’s constitution.

The elections, originally scheduled for Wednesday by the leadership of Alhaji Haruna Danjuma and Dr Ekunday Ademola in Abuja, were supposed to be supervised by the Federal Ministry of Education, but the Danjuma-led faction reportedly “contradicted a key provision that the NAPTAN elections should only be held between April and May”.

Blueprint has learned that, following the split between parents and NAPTAN management, the meeting organized to elect the new exco was abruptly terminated.

Speaking after the failed elections, the head of NAPTAN, Federal Ministry of Education, Joseph Achede, confirmed the tenure of the current leadership, led by Alhaji Haruna Danjuma, in contradiction to the association’s rule, which prescribes a single four-year term for its leaders,

It was also learned that the current leadership of NAPTAN has been in office for over 20 years, a case that has polarized members of the national body.

“Until both parties reconcile and follow due process, no election will be recognized. Any election conducted outside the supervision of the Federal Ministry of Education is null and void,” Achede said.

He said that after the failed elections, what is advisable is for both factions to return to dialogue and reconcile their differences in order to install a credible leadership of NAPTAN.

According to the NAPTAN official, “With major education reforms and policy commitments for 2027 in sight, stakeholders must unite for a constitutionally compliant NAPTAN, which is critical to representing parents effectively.”
