TRCN and GMind Academy promote AI training for teachers nationwide

The Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) and GMind Academy are exploring ways to promote artificial intelligence (AI) training for teachers across the 774 local government areas (LGAs) of the country.

Co-founder and CEO of GMind AI and founder of GMind Academy, Dr Success Ojo, disclosed this during a courtesy visit to the TRCN in Abuja.

The proposed training of 774 AI adoption specialists, with one specialist designated for each local government area, to support teachers, schools and other education stakeholders in understanding and safely and effectively adopting AI.

He said the GMind Academy is ready to train the 774 specialists and provide each participant with two months of free access to the GMind AI platform, allowing them to learn, practice and demonstrate practical applications of the technology.

According to her, specialists would serve as local champions of AI adoption, helping schools and teachers navigate the use of AI in teaching, learning, assessment and other educational activities.

Ojo also proposed that teachers who complete GMind Academy’s Certified AI-ready Teacher (CART) program be eligible to earn recognized professional development credits towards their continuing professional development requirements with TRCN, subject to Board approval and applicable requirements.

He said integrating AI skills into teachers’ continuing professional development would help make AI training an integral part of their professional development rather than a one-off intervention.

Ojo commended the TRCN for its role in teacher registration, professional standards, licensing, accreditation and continuous professional development, saying these functions are important in strengthening the teaching profession and Nigeria’s education system.

He also recognized the federal government’s ongoing education reforms focused on teacher professionalization, quality of education and digital skills.

He said the collaboration between TRCN and GMind Academy could help extend the adoption of artificial intelligence in education from the national to grassroots level and provide teachers with practical skills to use emerging technologies responsibly.
