Ogun Assembly passes Safe Termination of Pregnancy Bill

The Ogun State Assembly has passed a bill that aims to reduce maternal morbidity and mortality and promote safe motherhood and reproductive health rights in the state.

The legislation, titled “HB No. 036/OG/2026 – Ogun State Safe Termination of Pregnancy Act, 2026”, also seeks to establish conditions for safe termination of pregnancy in accordance with legally recognized guidance.

The bill was passed yesterday during plenary chaired by the Speaker, Oludaisi Elemide, at the Assembly Complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

According to a statement from the House Clerk on Friday, the move followed the presentation of the report of the House Committee on Health by its chairman, Wahab Haruna, who moved for the adoption of the report.

The motion was seconded by the Chief Whip, the Hon. Omobola Bakare, and supported by the legislators through a voice vote.

The bill was subsequently considered and adopted point by point before the motion for its third reading was moved by Babatunde Tella and seconded by Lukman Adeleye.

It was subsequently supported unanimously through a voice vote. Legislative Service Officer/Head, Sakiru Adabakin, then read the bill for the third time before the legislators.

Upon its approval, the speaker directed that a clean copy of the bill be forwarded to the governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, for his assent.
