Nigeria’s debt profile increased by N7.44tn in 3 months, reaching N166.8tn

Nigeria’s total public debt stock increased by N7.44 trillion in three months to N166.79 trillion on June 30, 2026, the Debt Management Office (DMO) revealed in its latest data.

The latest figures show an increase from N159.35 trillion recorded at the end of the first quarter of this year.

The breakdown shows that domestic debt accounted for N91.59 trillion, or 54.91 percent of the total portfolio, while external debt accounted for the rest.

In dollar terms, the country’s total debt reached $120.93 billion, consisting of $54.52 billion in external debt and $66.41 billion in domestic debt.

The external debt component was converted using the official Central Bank of Nigeria exchange rate of N1,379.1842 as of June 30, 2026.

The Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) accounts for the majority of domestic and external debt.

According to the DMO, the federal government accounted for N152.77 trillion of the total debt, consisting of N86.99 trillion domestic debt and N65.77 trillion external debt.

State governments and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) contributed the remaining N14.01 trillion, consisting of N4.59 trillion domestic debt and N9.42 trillion external debt.

Federal government bonds remained the largest category, with a value of N64.84 trillion, representing 74.53 per cent of FGN domestic debt.

Next is Nigeria’s Treasury Bills, which account for N19.48 trillion, or 22.39 per cent, of the FGN’s domestic debt.

FGN sukuk amounted to N1.19 trillion, promissory notes amounted to N1.22 trillion (comprising N206.82 billion naira-denominated debt securities and N1.01 trillion foreign currency debentures), N122.45 billion FGN savings bonds, and N47.36 billion green bonds.
