Armed men attack a highland mining site as a curfew fails to stop more violence

At least five miners have been killed and two others injured after gunmen attacked a mining site in Marit village, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of ​​Plateau State.

The incident, which occurred around 1pm on Saturday, came amid rising tension and a spate of attacks reported in some parts of the state.

Berom Youth Moulders Association spokesperson Rwang Tengwong confirmed the attack, describing the killings as another painful loss for the community.

He said five people were killed while two others were injured during the assault.

Tengwong condemned the attack and called on security agencies to urgently strengthen the protection of residents and prevent further bloodshed.

Community member Simon Mundat also confirmed the casualties, saying the incident had left residents devastated.

He appealed to the authorities to improve security in the community to allow residents to carry out their legitimate activities without fear.

At the time of writing, spokespersons for Operation Enduring Peace, Captain Polycarp Oteh, and Plateau State Police Command, SP Alabo Alfred, had not responded to queries on the attack.

The latest incident occurred despite measures announced by the Plateau state government to contain the worsening security situation.

The government had imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew in three local government areas, including Barkin Ladi, on Monday following a series of attacks and killings.

State Information and Communications Commissioner Joyce Ramnap on Friday condemned the incessant attacks in the affected communities and urged residents to remain calm and law-abiding.

Meanwhile, security operatives working with local hunters have reportedly repelled an attack by suspected terrorists on Latok community in Qua’an Pan Local Government Area.

One resident, Danat Noel, said security personnel, supported by local hunters, responded quickly after the attackers arrived in the community.

According to him, the officers attacked the attackers, forcing them to retreat from the area.
