BC’s Eby promises a new tax on millionaires to help pay for healthcare

British Columbia NDP Leader David Eby says his party will introduce a new tax bracket for those earning $1 million or more to help pay for health care, if re-elected.

The leader made the announcement Sunday, while campaigning in Comox on Vancouver Island, after he toured southern British Columbia ahead of election day Oct. 24.

Eby said he would provide additional details about the new tax brackets on the campaign trail in Victoria.

He said his party supports those who are doing well financially, but it is also right to ask “people who earn a little more to come along in moments like this,” when strong public services are needed.

The announcement came after Eby said his government would implement a price control policy for certain foodstuffs, as well as petrol and diesel, and temporarily reduce the vehicle fuel tax by 10 cents per liter.

Eby said in the early stages of the campaign that his party would impose a new tax on empty condominiums and repeal the speculation and vacancy tax.
