Chelsea compounded Manchester United’s difficult start to the 2026/27 Premier League season by winning 2-0 at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, leaving manager Michael Carrick under renewed pressure after another disappointing result.
Morgan Rogers opened the scoring shortly after the break before Cole Palmer converted a penalty to secure all three points for the home side in a match which also saw United defender Lisandro Martínez sent off. Project reports
The defeat came just days after United suffered a 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth, extending their run and intensifying questions over Carrick’s ability to turn the team around.
Chelsea, meanwhile, are back to winning ways following their recent league defeat to Tottenham and their League Cup exit to Liverpool.
United don’t take advantage of their first-half opportunities
Manchester United had the opportunity to take control of the match in the first half, but were disappointed with the finish.
Bruno Fernandes, back in the starting lineup after missing out against Bournemouth, was involved in United’s attempts to create openings, while Amad Diallo and Matheus Cunha also threatened Chelsea’s defence.
Cunha appeared to have given United the lead in the 34th minute when he headed home from close range following Fernandes’ corner.
However, the goal was disallowed after a VAR review ruled that the Brazilian was in an offside position during the build-up.
Chelsea also had their moments, with Estêvão causing problems on the right flank. The Brazilian thought he had scored after a shot from Pedro Neto, but his shot was ruled out for offside.
The teams thus went into halftime without scoring, despite an entertaining first half in which both teams had the opportunity to break the deadlock.
Rogers gives Chelsea a turning point
Chelsea returned from the break with greater urgency and were rewarded five minutes into the second half.
Rogers produced an impressive individual strike in the 50th minute, outpacing the United defense before lifting the ball over goalkeeper Senne Lammens.
The move started with Roméo Lavia winning possession in midfield. The ball eventually reached Rogers, who showed composure and determination to beat United’s defenders before finishing.
The goal changed the course of the match, forcing United to chase the game and giving Chelsea more confidence to exploit the spaces left by the visitors.
United struggled to find the same attacking rhythm they showed in the first half and their task became significantly more difficult when Martínez was sent off.
Martínez red card and Palmer wins from a penalty
The turning point came in the 63rd minute, when Martínez was sent off after the VAR review against Wesley Fofana.
The Argentine defender had already been booked and received a second yellow card after referees reviewed the incident, leaving United with 10 players.
Chelsea were also awarded a penalty, which Palmer converted in the 64th minute to double the hosts’ lead.
Although Lammens contributed to the shot, the Chelsea striker’s shot had enough force to beat the goalkeeper and make it 2-0.
The sending-off effectively ended United’s hopes of a comeback, with Chelsea enjoying greater control of the game against reduced opposition.
Estêvão had another effort disallowed for offside as Chelsea continued to threaten, but the Brazilian was not on the scoresheet. The two goals that matter came from Rogers and Palmer.
The defeat raises new questions about Carrick’s future
Beyond the three points gained by Chelsea, the result could have significant consequences for Carrick and Manchester United.
The club had reportedly decided to retain the former United midfielder for the Stamford Bridge match despite the damaging 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth.
That decision gave Carrick the opportunity to strengthen the team and alleviate growing concerns surrounding its management. However, the defeat against Chelsea did little to improve their position.
United started the weekend in 16th place, just one point above the relegation zone, having won just one of their opening eight league games. Their poor performance had already placed the manager under intense scrutiny, with Bournemouth’s defeat further highlighting the team’s difficulties.
Defeat at Stamford Bridge means United are now nine games without a win in all competitions, increasing pressure on the club’s hierarchy to assess the team’s direction.
Carrick’s immediate challenge is to restore confidence, improve the team’s defensive organization and find a way to turn promising offensive attacks into goals. United’s failure to create first-half chances against Chelsea was particularly costly, while Martínez’s dismissal made an already difficult task almost impossible.
The club’s decision to keep Carrick in place for the Chelsea match should not automatically be interpreted as a long-term guarantee of his position. With results continuing to disappoint, questions about its future are likely to persist.
However, there had been no official announcement of his dismissal following Saturday’s match, and any suggestion that the club had already decided to sack him would be premature.
Chelsea regains momentum
For Chelsea, the victory provides an important response after a difficult week under Xabi Alonso.
The Blues had lost 2-0 to Tottenham in the Premier League before suffering elimination from the League Cup following a penalty defeat to Liverpool.
Beating Manchester United offers an opportunity to rebuild confidence and maintain their position among the top teams in the table.
