Violence erupts in Jigawa as farmers-herders clashes leave two dead

Clashes between herders and farmers in Birnin Kudu Local Government Area of ​​Jigawa State left two people dead and three houses destroyed on Tuesday, the state police command confirmed.

The incident, which followed alleged encroachment and destruction of farmlands in Safa and Gaurakai villages by cattle herders from Katsina State, escalated into violence, according to DSP Lawan Shiisu, the Police Public Relations Officer.

“On Tuesday, at about 4pm, the command received information that herders with a large number of cattle from Katsina State, who were invited by local herdsmen, were seen moving towards Safa and Gaurakai villages,” Shiisu said.

He added, “In response, the Area Commander of Birnin Kudu Area Command deployed a joint patrol team of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and the Nigerian Vigilance Group to the scene.”

The conflict reportedly escalated as farmers moved to defend their land, leading to violent clashes before security forces intervened.

“As the visiting herders retreated with their livestock, casualties were reported on both sides, with two fatalities recorded,” Shiisu confirmed. “In addition, three houses belonging to indigenous herders were burnt down, and 15 livestock belonging to the visiting herders were rescued.”

Five people suspected of inviting herdsmen from Katsina were arrested, with efforts made to restore calm in the affected areas through joint security deployment.

Shiisu assured that the investigation was ongoing and reiterated his commitment to bringing to justice anyone found guilty of the violence.
