British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has offered to step down as Conservative Party leader following his landslide defeat by Labour’s Keir Starmer in Thursday’s election.
Sunak, who had congratulated Starmer, told reporters outside Downing Street that he would step down once a new party leader was found.
βTo the country, first of all I would like to express my apologies.
“I have given my all to this job, but you have sent a clear signal that the British government must change. And your decision is the only one that matters.

βI have heard your anger, your disappointment, and I take responsibility for this defeat,β he said.
Regarding Starmer’s election victory, Sunik said:
“In this office, his success will be our success and I wish him and his family the best. Whatever our differences in the campaign, he is a good and socially minded man whom I respect.
βHe and his family deserve our best understanding as they make this major transition to a new life behind closed doors.β
