The Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) has rescued five victims of human trafficking in Ivory Coast.
The Regional Superintendent of the Seme NIS Regional Command, Abdullahi Adamu, disclosed this at a press conference on Friday.
He said the Nigerian Immigration Attaché in Ivory Coast in collaboration with the Nigerian community in the country and several other partners, was working tirelessly to identify and rescue the victims.
Adamu added that immigration services were also providing vital support and assistance to ensure their safe return to Nigeria.
He said: “These girls, aged between 17 and 21, were trafficked on June 15, 2024 to Côte d’Ivoire using illegal routes by known human traffickers.
“The traffickers lure them with promises of better jobs in Ivory Coast.
“They then become victims of emotional abuse and are forced into prostitution.”
The financial watchdog said the victims are currently receiving counselling and other necessary support.
He said the command would hand them over to the National Agency for the Eradication of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) in Lagos to reunite them with their families and take further necessary action.
Adamu said that currently officers are hunting for the traders for possible arrest.
“We will continue to work with other partners to ensure justice is served.
“We will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that those involved in this heinous crime are brought to justice,” he said.
