Plumptre played a crucial role in helping the Super Falcons qualify for the Olympic women’s football tournament, 16 years since their last appearance.
“The timing hasn’t aligned for me to be in contention for the Olympic spot, a dream I’ve had for as long as I can remember,” Plumptre said.
“Since my surgery, I have worked in every area of my life to put myself in the best position to recover, but one thing I have learned is to listen to my body.
She also wished the team well in her absence: “On a personal level, it is a shame not to be able to participate, but I cannot put into words my excitement and pride knowing that I will see my Super Falcons girls representing this flag on the Olympic stage. Good luck girls! Naija to the world!”
The former Leicester City star performed strongly for the Super Falcons at the Women’s World Cup in New Zealand and Australia, further highlighting her importance to the team.
