Kano Governor Yusuf makes U-turn, approves appointment of three second-class Emirs

In a bid to reorganize the traditional leadership structure in Kano State, Governor Abba Yusuf, on Wednesday, approved the appointment of three second-class Emirs for the emirates of Rano, Gaya and Karaye.

The new emirate will be under the auspices of the first-class emirate of Kano, with the following emirs appointed:

– Alhaji Muhammad Karaye (Emir Karaye)
– Alhaji Muhammad Umar (Emir Rano)
– Alhaji Aliyu Abdulkadir Gaya (Emir of Gaya)

The governor’s spokesman, Sanusi Tofa, announced the appointments in a statement on Wednesday. The new emirs were previously regents in their respective areas.

This development follows the signing of a bill by Governor Yusuf on Tuesday, which establishes three second-class emirates in the state.

The emirate will encompass certain local government areas, with Rano encompassing Rano, Kibiya, and Bunkure, Gaya encompassing Gaya, Ajingi, and Albasu, and Karaye encompassing Karaye and Rogo.

The governor has urged the newly-appointed emirs to promote culture, peace and unity in their respective emirates.

The move is seen as a significant development in the state’s traditional leadership structure, with implications for the political and cultural landscape of Kano State.

The Kano State government had earlier dissolved the four emirate councils in the state formed by the administration of former Governor Abdulahi Ganduje.

This comes after the state’s House of Representatives officially passed a bill to dissolve the five emirate councils in the state. The decision was taken after deliberations in the House during a plenary session.

Soon after this, Governor Yusuf re-installed Muhammadu Sanusi II who had been deposed four years earlier as Emir of Kano.
