The Lagos State government, today Wednesday, July 17, debunked a viral fake news story on social media, emphatically stating that the state has not reintroduced monthly environmental sanitization and will not initiate any movement restrictions from July.
In a statement released, the State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, said the viral news is the work of ill-intentioned people who only want to confuse residents.
He urged all residents to ignore the content of the viral fake news and continue with their legitimate business activities, adding that there will be no restrictions on movement on the last Saturday of July, as erroneously reported in the fake news.
Wahab explained that what Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu announced on Sunday during a sanitation awareness exercise at Campos Playground in Lagos Island was that the state would launch a weekly community-based awareness and sensitization exercise involving all residents.
In his words:
“The governor also said that state government officials will be on the front lines every week, going around to join residents in cleaning their environment on a voluntary basis, preaching the message.”
Tokunbo Wahab added that so far the governor has never stated that the monthly exercises and restrictions will begin in July or any other month.
The Commissioner urged all residents to imbibe the culture of cleanliness of their surroundings at all times and not to wait for the government to declare a particular month for the start of sanitization operations or restriction of movement.
