Gumi warns #EndBadGovernance protests will lead to anarchy in Nigeria

The economic damage Buhari caused will take 40 years to rebuild

Popular Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has asked organisers of the EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protests planned to start on August 1 to shelve the idea as it could lead to anarchy.

The Kaduna-based cleric made the appeal in a statement on his Facebook page on Sunday.

He said although corruption was destroying Nigeria and hampering the country’s development, planned nationwide protests should be postponed for fear of spreading anarchy.

Gumi noted that rampant corruption in various sectors of Nigerian society, from government institutions to the economy, has set the country back several years.

However, he warned that the timing of the protests could trigger unrest in the country.

He said: “With all due respect to the few honest Nigerian citizens, since corruption has permeated the fabric of society, and there is hardly a single institution that is without flaws, the recent steps taken by the youths to challenge bad governance and bad leadership are a good sign of a brighter future for the nation.

“At one time, the executive was largely corrupt. So were the legislature, the academics, the judiciary, the armed forces, the trade unions, and even the wealthy citizens, all witnessed how the country was slowly sinking into starvation and lawlessness, every corner pursuing its own interests to accumulate wealth, the youth suddenly emerged as the last hope of this country.

“In this regard, I urge the youth to postpone their planned protest action this August until January 1st next year.

“The reasons are: First and foremost, to give enough time to coordinate their various youth groups to be more organized so that whatever demands they want can be well articulated for the betterment of the nation. It is said if you do not plan to succeed, you are planning to fail.

“Any premature action by the youth is likely to lead to greater anarchy and chaos because not everyone is on board with their noble ambitions. And I believe they should not be left to do so.”
