The Ekiti State High Court, Ado-Ekiti, on Thursday sentenced one Owoeye Ojo died by hanging due to an attempt to murder and armed robbery.
Ojo was charged with the accusation of four counts of attempted murder and armed robbery on August 25, 2023.
The prosecutor told the court that the defendant with someone else, while armed with weapons, ax and mattresses, robbed and tried to kill a Funmilayo Adeyemi and Omolaola Adesola in the Capital of the State.
They robbed Adeyemi from his handbag containing money and handset worth N85,000.
The defendant and his group robbed Adesola from his laptop, telephone and the amount of cash N 10,000 in Ilokun, Ado Ekiti, on May 12, 2023.
Violations violate sections 314, 312 (2) (b), 241 and 312 (a) of the Criminal Law of the State Ekiti, 2021.
In his testimony before the court, Adesola Omolaola said: “I was in my house around 8:00 at night, I would sleep, but one of my sons was outside.
“I tried to lock the door from behind, and realized that there was a push from outside. I opened the door to find out why the door was not closed; I saw the defendant and the others holding weapons, tables and ax.
“I was ordered to lie down lying face down; they ordered my eldest son to lead them into the room where they brought valuables and the amount of my cash worth N710,000.
“After they left, I reported this problem at the police station okay ila. A week later, I heard that some armed robbers had been arrested in the environment.
“When I visited them at the Nigerian Police Office’s quick response team (RRS), I saw and identified the defendant as one of the robbers who robbed my house.”
To prove his case, the prosecutor, Florence Ajumobi, called four witnesses and submitted a single barrel, live cartridge, the defendant’s statement, and photographs of the victims among others as exhibitions, while the legal advisor, Mr. Lawrence Fasanmi, was not called a witness.
In his assessment, Judge Lekan Ogunmoye said: “With the trustworthy evidence before the court, the prosecutor has determined that there is a robbery at the victim’s place.
“The defendant is one of those who took part in armed robbery, and there was an agreement between him and the others.
“Therefore, prosecution is proven without doubt that the defendant committed a violation as charged.
“As a result, the defendant with this was sentenced to death by hanging, may God forgive his soul, the judge was said.”
