The recent report that describes in detail the arrest of seven police officers in the state of imo for extortion and harassment on the block points should not be rejected as a simple acrobatics of public relations. Instead, it is a testimony of the genuine commitment of police commissioner (CP) Abaki Danjuma to fight corruption within the police forces and restore public trust in the police.
Having had multiple interactions with CP Abaki and the DSP of Propro Relations (PPRO) Henry Okoye, I can safely attest to their unshakable dedication to promote the professional, transparent, responsible and responsible police. These are not people who put a facade; They are really committed to supporting the standards of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and protect the public from the defects that unfortunately have come to define the police in many parts of the country.
My personal experience with the CP Danjuma has only strengthened my belief in its determination. Over time, I have brought several cases of harassment and extortion of the police to his attention and every time he responded quickly, ordering investigations and ensuring that the authors are held responsible. In some cases, the money that was extorted by citizens since the bustarella was recovered and returned to its legitimate owners. These actions are not only commendable, but show the commitment of CP Abaki for the integrity and equity within its command.
The recent arrest of the seven officers during a surprise checkpoint inspection on June 17, 2025, is a clear example of its continuous efforts to ensure that bad apples within the force do not obscure the image of the entire institution. According to the police spokesperson, DSP Okoye, these officers were arrested during a state -of -level operational tour led by the CP Abaki, covering the main highways such as the streets of Owerri -onitsha, Owerri -Port Harcourt and Owerri -Umuaia. This tour was a direct response to numerous complaints by the public on the bad police conduct, in particular to checkpoints.
CP Abaki actions during the tour speak volumes on his approach to the police. He has not only inspected the checkpoints, but he worked directly with the officers, reminding them of the fundamental principles of the modern police: discipline, integrity and respect for human rights. This is not a man who simply tries to create titles; This is a leader who includes the long -term importance to reconstruct the trust between the police and the public.
During the inspection, CP Abaki issued a stern warning: any official deemed guilty of extortion or intimidation should have faced serious disciplinary actions, including dismissal and possible judicial procedure. This level of responsibility is exactly what the public must see from the police leadership if we want to overcome the long -standing issues of corruption that have afflicted the strength.
In addition, CP Abaki has shown transparency by keeping open conversations with motorists and commuters, encouraging them not to offer bribes or surrender to telephones for unauthorized research. He also took the crucial phase for the distribution of emergency contact numbers for the response unit X and complaint (cru) of the command, ensuring the public that all relationships would have been managed with the utmost professionalism and confidentiality.
This initiative is a significant step towards the construction of a police force based on justice, integrity and public service. CP Abaki actions provide a professional police model, which serves people rather than exploiting them. He is actively working to clean the police system of corrupt elements and his leadership deserves recognition.
As a supporter of the responsibility of the police, I continue to praise CP Abaki for its exceptional leadership. His actions not only restore trust in the police forces, but have also given a powerful example for other states. The fight against corruption in the police requires leaders who are not afraid to make difficult decisions and to consider their officers responsible, regardless of the cost. CP Danjuma Abaki is one of these leaders and his work in the state of imo is proof that change is possible when there is a real commitment to the reform.
In conclusion, the recent arrest of the seven officers is not just a fleeting accident: it is part of a wider effort and supported to professionalize the police forces and restore its dignity. The actions of CP Abaki recall that while there is still a lot of work to do in the fight against the misconduct of the police, we are lucky to have leaders like him at the helm, which are willing to adopt the hard steps but necessary to make a significant change.
CP Abaki, DSP Okoye and the entire IMO State Police Command have set a high standard for the police in Nigeria, and it is my hope that their example inspires more leader within the strength to follow the example.
