A court arrested 11 people on suspicion of cultism and robbery in Lagos

The Chief Magistrate’s Court, Yaba, Lagos State has arrested 11 persons for alleged membership of a secret society, conspiracy to commit armed robbery, and unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition.

The 11 suspects were on Wednesday arraigned by the Lagos State Police Command before Magistrate OY Adefope.

They include: Bamidele Bakare, Muriana Anuoluwapo, Sheriff Alausa, Emmanuel David, Godwin Asado, Abdullahi Taoheed, Olorunwa Ayeniran, Taoheed Alade, Abdullahi Isa, Bolaji Oseni, and Tobi Adedayo

The suspects were charged with three counts of conspiracy to commit a crime and belonging to a secret society, conspiracy to commit armed robbery, and unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.

The indictment alleges that on May 25, 2024, the 11 suspects, with intent to disrupt the law and order of the residents of Itire, Surulere, and Amuwo Odofin, unlawfully became members and managed a secret society known as the Eiye Brotherhood, in which they organizing and disrupting the law and order of the residents of the Lagos area.

Moreover, one locally made single-barreled gun, two live bullets and 14 rounds of Beretta 9MM pistol ammunition, which they used for unlawful activities, were found in their possession.

Residents of Itire, Surulere and Amuwo Odofin are known to have reported a series of robberies and criminal activities, leading to investigations into the robberies. As a result, the tactical team assigned to Amuwo Odofin raided the suspects’ hideout and found ammunition, and arrested them on May 27, 2024.

Prosecutor Haruna Magaji told the court that the alleged offense was committed on May 25, 2024.

He stated that the alleged offense violates and is punishable under Article 328, Article 2(3)(a)(b)(d)(e) of the Law of Unlawful Societies and Cults in Lagos State Nigeria, 2021, and Article 411 of the Law Lagos State Crimes Nigeria, 2015.

The defendants’ application was not accepted in court. Adefope ordered that the defendants be returned pending further trials. However, the trial was further postponed until September 25, 2024.
