An unidentified man on Saturday dived into the Gbodofon River in Osun State.
An eyewitness told reporters that the middle-aged man complained that he was tired of life and jumped into the river in the state capital, Osogbo, at 10:30 am.
“I saw him coming towards me on the bridge and seemed to mutter something in Yoruba that sounded like ‘ile aye ti su’ (I’m tired of this life), before quickly jumping over the railing into the river,” he said.
Officers from the Osun State Fire Service were called to the scene to rescue the man before he drowned.
Fire department spokesman, Mr. Ibrahim Adekunle, confirmed the incident.

He said firefighters were unable to reach the man because of the water level and current.
“Our stations in Okefia and Abere immediately deployed personnel to the scene when we were informed of the incident.
“However, our officers could not rescue the man because the water level rose due to heavy rains,” Adekunle said.
