A rape of Edo forests, destruction to the means of subsistence, rural community and the environment (II)

Preamboli:
The 2025 verse of the World Environment Day (Mer) has been marked. “Beat Plastic Pollution” is its theme. But in the country’s state of Edo, the issues on silviculture, biodiversity and sustenance are more current and dominant. You should then make a summary on the first thesis as a guide of this version. The government of the state of Edo, with Mr. Godwin Obaseki as Governor, since 2016-2024 (eight years in all), has been reported how to have guided an “infamy package”, among the 37 charges of states of Nigeria, where Edo was (and is the highest living room factor, the highest life factor, the highest life dress, the highest life dress.

The results are sticky and verified statistics of the United Nations environment program (UNEP) and other scrupulous global institutions.

An official visit to the current governor of the state, senator on Monday Okpebholo, came to confirm the bone of the dispute between Mr. Obaseki and the Okpamakhin Community Initiative (Oci), the coalition against the terrace and deforestation (Cald) and other civil society organizations (CSO). The Onitsha Zone Stakeholders Association, the visiting group, led by Bishop Goodluck Akpore, said that “Edo’s state had given Preco 36,388 hectares of land. Obaseki was enjoying those two companies (including Okomu Oil Palm Company Plc), showing billions, not N2 or N20. I have the recordings”.

The shepherd Osagie Ize-Iyamu had added; “The last time they were forced to pay taxes was when his partner Adams Oshiomhole closed them. Our state was sacked by these multimiliarded companies. What they cannot do in other places is what they have done here. And it has been worse in the last eight years”.

Hon Valentine Asuen

The governor Okpebholo, who was shocked by the revelations, promised to investigate the matter and to recover the aforementioned forest and community lands to their owners. During his election campaign, the governor had committed himself to examining all the accusations of grabbing agricultural land, private and forest reserve communities. This must have strengthened the recent Avowal declaration by the deputy governor of the State, Hon Dennis Idahosa, to the Protestants of farmers in the state, that the government was ready to revoke and claim the lands, where they had been unjustly acquired.

Zoo problems and Benin-Gaba Park (Benzopa):
The main enclave of resources for the destination and conservation of education and awareness is one of the last remains of the Guinea rain forest of the plains of the type located in the center of the city of Africa. Benzopa is mostly neglected by the state government, but since then it would have gone without a concerted protection by Evel Services Limited, her management consultant. Oci has asked his usual question from previous governments, but now on the government’s table for Okpebholo, which is mainly the actualization of the arbitration agreement, reached between EVERAL SERVICES Limited and Edo State Government, from November 2000.

*Connections of the forest reserve undue to multinational companies and others*:
The Obaseki government has unjustifies vast terrestrial areas from the reservations of the state rainforest to its friends, the large owners of mono-crop plantations, compared to any governor in the history of the state. These terrestrial areas disputed include over 13,750 hectares of land from the Okomu and Owan Bc 12 Forest Reserve forest reserve, which the executive council of the former governor Oshiomhole had revoked. Former governor Obaseki, who was a vital part of the Oshiomhole government, which revoked the lands, was the same that soon returned it to the Okomu Oil Palm Company, who first grabbed them. Fresh lands were subsequently sold inside the forest reserves of Ehor, Urhonigbe, Ekiadolor, Owan BC 12 and iuleha-Ora-Ozalla, respectively to the fronts of Obaseki’s affairs.

There were prolonged street protests and controversies in court, including one in suspense at the Regional Court of the Economic Community of the States of West Africa (Ecowas), by the initiative of the Okpamakhin community, on behalf of the wooded local communities, against the Edo government. There have been excessive bulldzing of agricultural land, crops and forests standing, they had at the inhabitants of the village, which caused an acute scation of basic foods and agricultural land, together with the richer biodiversity forest, in replacement of single -fault plantations.

* Appointment of Hon Valentine Asuen as President of the Forestry Commission*:
The largest complaints are that the recent appointment of Hon Valentine Asuen, as president of the Edo State Forestry Commission, was not required. They claim that the position deserves a forestry professional or one who is well informed. After the commission’s Slipshod institution by the former Obaseki governor, a single professional was appointed, where he managed the commission alone, without backup. This gave Obaseki the elasticity to distribute forest reserve land, at will.

So far and interesting, however, the onsuen, who is said to be not qualified, has conducted the business of the commission much better than said Obaseki professional. Hon Asuen seems to be a good listener, who could do better. A collaboration with Okomu National Park, Arakhuan-Udo, a global monument, which once has been undermined and violated, without tangible support by Obaseki, is a huge advantage for the Forestry Commission of Asuen and the governor Okpebholo.

Asuen’s push for monitoring the scarce remains of forest reserves and illegal deforestation activities is rather commendable. But the efforts would be worth if this had been made before Obaseki’s era, when forest reserves and permanent trees remained. The real fact is that there are an insignificant forest reserve without more trees of remaining measurable circumference. No thanks to the Obaseki government that wasted them!

To confirm this, also Hon Asuen would not be convinced that the sticks (which seemed bamboo stems), that they were loaded in trucks, that the illegal trunks were said to be seized, they could not pass like woods!

However, this is an alarm bell that the government of the state of Edo, driven by the Forestry Commission, could immediately go to an aggressive detention of reforestation or plantations of trees, in which the remaining exploited forest reserves, could be planted with short -term trees, which could be matured in a very short time.
.
Dr. Festus Onogholo and its African initiative for world peace, with its plan for trees planting at Ehor Forest Reserve, of Uhunmwodode LGA, are already preparing the rhythm for government and private investors.

Trunk, Hon Asuen and its commission must not be deceived by a national IDH project for the project of small owners of sustainable and climatic oil palm trees, which will be established on the scarce leftovers of the State Forest Reserve Tenuta. A populist government of the Senator Okpebholo should not indulge in this anti-peopoline project, which has given the embarrassing image of Obaseki’s government in the national and global phases. In Edo, we already have a serious scarcity crisis of food and land, which would be worsened if more lands were torn from the poor of the poor.

Nobody opposes the said Niscops project, which Mr. Augustine Ninyio, his manager, presented himself to Hon Asuen, while it is reserved for the oil palm plan which should also be planted on private land belonging to individuals. This project is better managed by the Ministry of Agriculture of the State and not by the Forestry Commission. A single harvest, not the oil palm or the IROKO tree can create a forest that is the business of a forestry commission.
