ADC criticized the Nigerian government for the selective use of the Okonjo-iweala economic statement

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has criticized the federal government for what he described as a selective interpretation of recent comments by the Director General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-iweala, about Nigerian economy.

In a statement on Friday signed by the Secretary of its national publicity, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the party accused the government of only celebrating Dr. Okonjo-iweala to “stabilize” while ignoring his call for urgent steps to stimulate growth, create jobs, and strengthen social safety nets.

According to ADC, administrative reactions reflect the search for validation rather than the original commitment to overcome Nigeria’s economic challenges.

Dr. Okonjo-iweala knows that a stable economy is one that grew in real terms, led by work and productivity. He knows that a stable economy is one that is able to guarantee the minimum standard of life for the people. What he actually said, what was carried out by the government, which was not ignored by the president, did not exist, and too many people were ignored, and too many people were not surprised, and too many people were not surprised, and many people suffered. Said Abdullahi.

ADC quoted an official figure to support its position, noted that the gross domestic product (GDP) grew by 3.13 percent in the first quarter of 2025 and slightly above 3 percent in the second quarter, the number he described failed in the “strong recovery” promised by the Tinubu administration.

The party further referred to in June 2025 inflation rates of 22.22 percent, with food inflation at 21.97 percent, the price of gasoline averaged at N1.037.66 per liter, and Naira trade around N1,530 to the dollar.

“This is a choice of Tinubu administrative policy, the elimination of fuel subsidies, naira devaluations, rising tariffs on electricity and transportation, which has triggered this difficulty and made social safety nets not optional but important. But this program has been managed carelessly, deferred, or added impact that can be ignored,” Abdullahi added.

ADC also attracts attention to the clarification of Dr. Okonjo-iweala next on social media, where he emphasized the importance of prioritizing the growth and creation of employment to alleviate difficulties.

Quoting it directly, the party noted its statement: “At the same time, it is necessary to start working to grow the economy to create more work and put money in people’s pockets.”

ADC warns that celebrating superficial stability without handling the underlying economic reality is at risk of disturbing urgent reform.

Every Nigerian who means well knows that celebrating the ‘stability’ appearance is solely pirrrhic. ADC strongly believes that such a medium is from a global economic leader such as Dr. Okonjo-iweala underlined the urgent need for federal government policies that exceeded rhetoric and propaganda but discussed the daily reality of the dominant billion-miliar below.
