The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has criticized the election of between Saturdays, describing the exercise as further evidence of what is called a decline in democracy under the government of the President of Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The Independent National Election Commission (Inec) has conducted an interim selection in 16 constituents in 12 state federations on Saturday.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Bolaji Abdullahi, Secretary of the National Publicity while ADC, accused that the poll was marked by violence, voting, manipulation, and “other administrative deviations.”
He argues that the results of the selection of the interim are not a reflection of the strength or capacity of the opposition coalition, but “a sad reflection on how far the system has been damaged outside the will of the people.”
Abdullahi stated that the exercise was the same as “gown exercise for the 2027 general election,” warning that if deviations are not handled, the integrity of the poll in the future can be very compromised.
ADC spokesman further revealed that the party did not reduce candidates in most electoral districts in which the elections were held. He, however, asked Inec to investigate what he called “bold and reckless deviations” and to give sanctions to every official who was considered guilty.
He also urged President Tinubu to “rise above the interests of partisan” and guarantee the electoral environment in which Nigerians can vote “freely and safely.”
“What Nigerians witnessed the Nigerian in the election of the interim election was another reminder that under the current government, democracy itself, such as the economy and national security, continued to decline under the President of Bola Ahmed Tinubu and APC,” the statement said.
Abdullahi argued that when the election was damaged by violence, vote trading, and the exception of opposition candidates, “Nigerians’ voices usually have no meaning.” He warned that Inec’s inability to ensure the credible selection of interruptions raised doubts about his readiness for the 2027 general election.
The party also appealed to the international community, especially democratic partners and Nigerian election observers, not to ignore irregularities. “Silence in dealing with the subversion of democratic norms that are so brave will only dare those who get profit from this chaos,” ADC said.
“Nigeria is too important for Africa and the world to allow democracy to collapse under the burden of impunity involved,” the statement added.
