Governor Ademola Adeleke of the State of Osun has directed an urgent intervention in Ipemodu, headquarters of the local government of Ife-North, following the prison of the city monarch, the Hypetumu Apetu, Oba Joseph Oloyede, in the United States for a multimillionary drew.
Oba Oloyede was sentenced to 56 months of prison by the United States district judge Christopher Boyko after being declared guilty of $ 4.2 million Covid-19 rescue fraud and presentation of fake tax documents.
His imprisonment has immersed Hypemodu in the uncertainty of the leadership, unleashing the tension between the houses in power, the kingmaker and residents.
Sources within the community have revealed that the gifts of the monarch, including the crown of beads and other accessories of the office, disappeared from his imprisonment.
While some kingmaker insist that the throne should remain vacant until Oba Oloyede completes his prison period, others have asked for his immediate substitute to avoid a prolonged leadership void.
Speaking after the meeting of the Executive Council of State on Friday, Adeleke described the development as “ugly” and commissioned the commissioner for the local government and the affairs of Chieftancy to adopt immediate measures to resolve the crisis.
“The commissioner for the local government and the affairs of Chieftancy should act on bad development to Ipermodu, where the king has recently been imprisoned in the United States of America,” said Adeleke in a declaration signed by the commissioner for public information and lighting, Kolapo Alimi.
The dominant house arvile, one of the royal families of the city, welcomed the governor’s directive. Prince Olaboye Ayola, speaking on behalf of the family, said that Adeleke’s intervention has been expected for some time.
“The governor’s directive is in line with the expectations of our people. It is a step in the right direction and the community has been waiting for this action for a long time,” he said.
But the head of the Kingmaker, the chief Sunday Adedeji, revealed that the Council of Kingmaker would have expected further directives from the state government before taking any action.
The leadership fight has intensified the division in the city, with fears that the prolonged absence of a monarch could feed deeper crisis if not urgently faced by the government.
