Afe Babalola slams Nigerian government over social assistance, says ‘they are turning Nigerians into beggars’

Aare Afe Babalola, founder of Afe Babalola University Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD), has criticized the Federal Government’s disbursement of social assistance to citizens, describing it as an attempt to turn Nigerians into beggars and plunge them into poverty.

He also expressed his support for the Patriots’ call for a new constitution.

Babalola made the comments during a visit by the Prestige Sisters League to the ABUAD campus of the institution. She addressed the recent protests across the country, saying that those protesting hunger were doing so sincerely because they were hungry.

“A hungry person can do anything to show his anger. We don’t need anyone to tell us about hunger in this country. The protests are genuine, and the government should listen to them,” said the senior lawyer.

He stressed that the primary duty of the government is to ensure the welfare of its citizens. However, he noted that the current government has failed in this regard, leading to hunger and insecurity.

“People cannot move freely. They have left their farms. People are being killed on their farms, and everyone wants to live in a safe place. Because the government has failed in this, we are experiencing famine,” he further said.

Babalola also criticized the government’s approach to addressing hunger, saying that distributing food items such as garri, beans and rice as a hunger reliever was wrong. “They are turning people into beggars. The government that gives people rice and beans is driving us into poverty. The government is preventing people from working, when the government should be providing an environment that allows people to work and meet their own needs.”

Regarding the Patriots’ call for a new constitution, Babalola expressed his support, suggesting that parliament reinstate the 1963 constitution.

“I read the publication of the Patriots’ visit to President Tinubu, and I completely agree with them. We need a new constitution. But I do not agree that we should go through any constitutional conference. The 1963 constitution was a constitution made by all of us. In the same way, parliament should restore the 1963 constitution and re-enact it,” he added.
