AFN: the zonal elections in the south -est, north -ovest end in Abuja
Abuja (Core reporter) The Federation of Athletics of Nigeria (Afn) has strengthened its Board of Directors following the completion of the South -East and North Zonal Elections -Western on Wednesday 11 June 2025, at the Media Center of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.
Supervised by the honorable Bukola Olopade, general manager of the National Sports Commission (NSC), the elections saw Mr. Festus Okieor safely the southern ticket -est with a unanimous vote of 4-0, while Abubakar Ladan Zermi conquered the position of the North West with a convincing 5-1 victory with honorable Sunday of Kaduna State.
Speaking after the elections, the general manager of the NSC, the honorable Bukola Olopade, praised the trial for his transparency and credibility.
“Athletics is one of our main sports and it is therefore very important to do it well with the electoral processes because it will be the foundation of everything that will be achieved in the next four years,” he said.
“The success of the Commission is linked to the way our federations behave, as through them we are implementing the renewed Hope sports mandate that Mr. President has entrusted us. The AFN is a federation that we cannot afford to play.”
He also urged the unity and collaboration within the Athletics Community.
“We know that everyone cannot be on the Board of Directors at the same time, but we all belong to the same sports family, working for the general interest of Nigerian sports. Therefore we appeal to each stakeholder to seek peace and reconciliation at any time, to de-fellow tensions, especially concerning electoral issues,” he concluded.
