Africa must take the ownership of its security – Amina Mohammed

The Deputy Secretary General of the United Nations, Amina Mohammed, has accused African defense of taking full property of the continent.

Mohammed who gave the assignment to the inauguration of the Maiden African Chiefs of Defence on Monday in Abuja, warned that violent extremism, IT war and climate change were remodeling the stability of Africa

He described the summit as “the birth of a new era in African security cooperation”, noting that it was a rare opportunity to connect the boots on the ground with the policies that shape the collective future of the continent.

“Africa today is the epicenter of the deaths of global terrorism. Attacks in the coastal states of West Africa have increased by 250 % in just two years.

“By the end of last year, 14,000 schools were closed in Sahel because of conflicts. We risk losing an entire generation,” he warned.

The deputy head of the United Nations, which is a former Nigerian Minister of the Environment, has also highlighted new emerging threats.

“Today Cyberspazio is a battle space. Once it has been the radio to transport messages of hatred and incitement of the genocide; today they are social media, amplifying the division at terrifying speed,” he said.

On artificial intelligence, Mohammed warned that while the IA could help predict food insecurity and detect anti -human mines, also increases deep risks for human rights, dignity and rule of law.

According to her, algorithms are already used to make decisions on life or death, a responsibility that must remain human.

He also underlined the role of climate change in refueling insecurity.

“The residential waters of the lake only have churned out over three million people. The tests are overwhelming and the consequences are undeniable,” he added.

Mohammed urged African leaders to act collectively, underlining that security could not be pursued in insulation as it is inseparable by development, human rights and climatic resilience.

“Above all, Africa will not be a spectator. Africa will take the ownership of its security, smear peace technology and protect its people.

“Almost 1.5 billion of Africans count on us to get up to this moment,” he said.

In his observations, the former Prime Minister of the Republic of Guinea, Lansana Kouyate, urged African leaders to pursue collective security, underlining that peace has remained the basis of sustainable development on the continent.

Kouyaté said that the gathering of the defense of all 54 African countries reported a historical step in facing terrorism and insecurity.

“For the first time, the leaders of defense of the whole continent are together. This shows how important the subject is. Without peace, there is no development,” he said.

The former prime minister noticed that Africa was too often perceived as a single country rather than a continent of different nations, a legacy of both history and colonization.

He said he would further presented ideas on innovative safety for safety through public-private partnerships during the forum sessions.
