When the fire crossed Afriland Torri on Broad Street, Lagos, on September 16, 2025, hell left more than a trail of destruction. He claimed lives, including that of Mrs. Ndidi Osaemedike-Okeke, a respected lawyer and member of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Lagos Branch.
Beyond the pain and taxes, the tragedy has aroused a new conversation on the conformity of safety in the Lagos buildings of Lagos and the responsibility of those who are in charge of enforcing the standards.
In response, the NBA Lagos branch created an independent investigation group to examine what went wrong. According to the president of the branch, Uchenna Ogunedo Akingbade, the Panel mandate goes beyond mourning – is “investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident, evaluating compliance with the safety standards and formulating appropriate recommendations”.
The panel of six members, chaired by ‘are not Azih with Vivian Okoh-Olutunfese as an alternative chair, reflects the push of the association to use its influence not only in the classroom but also to model public policies on safety and human rights.
For many observers, the decision reports a growing recognition of the role that professional bodies can play in requesting responsibility. Fires in Lagos’s commercial hubs are not new. From the Balogun market to the skyscrapers, the repeated accidents have exposed gaps in the application of safety codes, response to emergencies and buildings management practices.
By convening this investigation, the NBA Lagos branch is actually entering a role of guard dog, using the death of one of its as painful reminder of systemic failures. The results of the panel could provide a roadmap not only for legal defense, but also for the practical reforms that make the work places safer in the busiest commercial city of Nigeria.
For mourning colleagues, the move also offers a path to justice and closure. For the city in general, it raises a wider question: how many more tragedies must occur before safety became more than a simple touch exercise?
