Aiyegbeni hits the creativity crisis of the midfield of Super Eagles

The former Super Eagles striker, Yakubu Aiyegbeni, has expressed concerns about the lack of creativity in the configuration of Nigeria’s midfield.

Aiyegbeni argued that the current national team is overloaded with defensive midfielders, leaving the strikers hungry for quality service.

He pointed out that even past strikers would be difficult to prosper in current circumstances.

“We are a bit short in the center of the field, that is the most important thing now because we do not have a creative midfielder who can pass the ball to the strikers,” Aiyegbeni told.

“Look how we scored goals in the national team in our day, it was different. We had players like Sunday Oliseh, Jay-Jay Okocha and Finidi George. But now, we don’t have that. We have too many defensive midfielders.”

The former Everton striker said that the lack of creativity explains why Nigeria’s strikers continue to fight in front of the goal.

“Even me, if I played in this generation, it would be difficult to score goals because there is no creative midfielder to supply passes.

“The only one we have is Alex Iwobi. He works hard, runs for 120 minutes, helps defense and does a great job, but it is not the type of creative midfielder who can constantly configure the strikers,” he added.

He asked that more attention be paid to the country’s center at all levels, emphasizing that it is an important factor in the current struggles of the national team.
