Akwa-Ibom Govt. Expulsion of the house: IPI requires an immediate call of TV Crew channels

Abuja (basic reporter) annoyed by the reckless action of the government of the state of Akwa Ibom against some journalists, the International Press Institute (IPI) has asked for the immediate call of journalist TV channels expelled from the Kwa Ibom State Government House on the orders of the state government.

This was contained in a declaration made available to basic journalists on Sunday 25 May 2025, who was jointly signed by the legal consultant IPI and president of the president’s defense committee, Tobi Soniyi and his secretary, Ochiaka Ugwu.

The correspondent of Channel TV and the Cameraman were expelled following a video clip broadcast on the TV channels in which the governor of Akwa Ibom, Umo Eno, was seen confirming his imminent defection by the Democratic Party Popoli (PDP) at the Congress of All Progressive (APC).

The reckless action of the state government is an alarming development. These journalists have expert media staff with a deep knowledge of government activities and no journalist should be done to face this type of humiliating treatment simply to do their job. We will continue to support and encourage the impartial report regardless of the situation.

The declaration said: “We strongly condemn the action of the government of the state of Akwa Ibom, which is a direct attack on the 1999 constitution, which guarantees freedom of expression.

“The action of the state government is also a serious violation of section 22 of chapter 2 of the Constitution, which provides that” the press, radio, television and other mass media agencies will always be free to support the fundamental objectives contained in this chapter and support the responsibility and responsibility of the government to the people “.

“It is particularly distressing and disappointing that the Governor Umbo Eno, considered a state manager suitable for the media, can behave in this way unacceptable and anti -democratic. With this present we remember that independent journalism, freedom of the press and impartial reportage are essential for democracy.

“We ask the governor to immediately reverse the expulsion and to save his government from further embarrassment,” says the declaration.
