The agents of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command arrested the head of the village of Ibagwa in the area of the local government of Abak, the head on Friday Jonah Umberen, for presumably attempted to kill his sister during a family dispute.
The public relations officer of the State Police, Timfon John, confirmed the accident in a statement on Tuesday, revealing that Umeren fired his 32 -year -old sister, Unwana Effeiong on Friday Inyang, head with a single bar gun made locally.
According to the police, the victim reported serious injuries but was running to the hospital, where he is receiving care and is said to be in stable conditions.
John explained that the arrest followed a relationship presented by a family member, who said that the traditional sovereign attacked his sister during an altercation on the ownership of the palm fruits in the village.
He said: “Saturday 6 September 2025, around 2.30 pm, the agents of the command received a report of an attempt to murder. The suspicion, head on Friday Jonah Moren, would have shot his sister, Unwana Effeiong on Friday Inyang, 32 years old, headed with a gun.
The victim was immediately running to the hospital for care, while the suspicion was arrested on the scene. A long single rod pistol was recovered, which was believed to have been used in the attack. “
The police spokesman added that the preliminary investigations revealed that the accident derived from a persistent family dispute on the ownership of the Palma fruit, which intensified in violence.
He assured that the suspicion would be accused in court following investigations, at the same time urging residents to seek lawful ways to resolve disputes rather than resorting to violence.
The development aroused shock among the residents of the Ibagwa community, which described the accident as “a sad stain on the image of traditional leadership in the area”.
