Following reports of illegal gold mining in the Gwagwalada area of the territory of the federal capital (FCT), the Minister of Development of solid minerals, dr. Dele Alake directed the mineral marshals to seal the site to mitigate potential environmental dangers.
This action arrives in the wake of a previous operation of the marshals that led to the successful recovery and sealing of a mining site around the District 2 extension layout in Gwagwalada on August 16, 2025. Sixic (16) suspects arrested will soon be pursued.
Preliminary investigations reveal that illegal artisan miners invaded the area after the accidental discovery of a golden vein during the excavation of a soaking pit near a residential property. The most recent accident took place in an agricultural land located behind CKC in Gwagwalada.
After receiving intelligence reports of renewed illegal mining activities, Dr. Alake promptly ordered the deployment of the mining marshals to guarantee the site.
Conducting an assessment of the area on Wednesday, the officials of the Ministry led by the director of the Inspectorate of Miniers, represented by the deputy director, Sunday Okhuoya, expressed satisfaction for the level of conformity with the Minister’s directive, revealing that the pertinent departments of the Ministry have started an in -depth investigation to reduce the roots of these accidents that recommended to maintenance of charging.
The commander of the mineral marshals, assistant commander of the body (acc) John Atth Onoja, confirmed that his team established 24 -hour surveillance on both affected sites, pending the outcome of the investigation under the federal government.
In light of the potential risks for environmental and public health associated with illegal mining operations, the minister advises residents to avoid the affected areas while the efforts of application and remediation are underway.
The Minister reiterates the decision of the Federal Government Company to eradicate illegal mining activities throughout the country stating that the Ministry is quickly tracing the deployment of satellite surveillance technology to monitor the extraction operations at national level and significantly strengthened the application capacity.
