Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum said he was deeply worried that imprisoned Boko Haram terrorists, ISWAP commanders, bandit kingpins and other dangerous terrorists may have escaped from Maiduguri correctional centre following the severe flooding that hit the state capital due to the collapse of the Alau Dam.
Recall that the over 40-year-old dam collapsed last Tuesday, causing the worst flood the state has seen in 30 years with over 50 people feared dead while over two million others have been displaced and properties worth billions of naira destroyed.
Zulum who sounded the alarm in an interview with BBC Hausa News said the security situation in the state could worsen with reports of the escape of terrorists numbering over 200.
Responding to a question regarding insinuations that some of the prisoners who might have escaped from the prison were terrorists, Zulum said:

“I am worried. Yes, I am really worried. But you must also remember that the Borno State Government has put in place what we call the Borno rehabilitation model, which has enabled many insurgents to repent.
“In the last two years, over 200,000 Boko Haram members and their families have been converted, and I think this has also yielded positive results in ensuring the return of peace and stability in Borno State.
“I remember more than 300,000 people were killed in Borno State, thousands of classrooms were destroyed, hundreds of facilities were destroyed due to the insurgency.
“We were just trying to get out of this, but now we are witnessing another disaster—a very serious disaster, another serious humanitarian crisis that no state governor can afford,” he added.
