Amendment to the Constitution: Gov Mbah advocated the Southeast Southeast State, Rotation Presidential

Governor Peter Mbah from the state of Enugu has expressed strong support for the ongoing constitutional amendment process, calling on the National Assembly to overcome the old demands for equality, inclusion, and regional balance, especially because they concern southeast.

Speaking on Friday during a full visit of courtesy by the Southeast Zonal Committee on the constitutional review of the House of Representatives, led by Hon. George Ozodinobi, Governor Mbah urged members of parliament to consider the creation of additional countries in the southeast, the institutionalization of the rotation president, and the formation of state police.

The visit, which took place at the Government Building in Enugu, preceded the Zonal Committee’s public hearing scheduled for Saturday at the International Conference Center, Enugu.

Describing the visit as “on time and symbolically,” Governor Mbah attracted attention to Enugu’s historic role in Nigeria’s legislative evolution, noted that the House of the Eastern Regional Assembly first met in the city in the early 1940s.

“You cannot discuss the evolution of legislative activities in this country without mentioning Enugu,” Mbah said. “This review process is a reminder that the constitution is about the people and for the people.”

The governor stressed that the constitution must reflect the collective will of the Nigerians and develop as a response to changes in the nation’s needs. He urged the committee to pay serious attention to structural reforms that promote national unity and a sense of ownership for all regions.

“For justice and inclusiveness, southeast must be given additional countries,” said Mbah. “This will help overcome imbalances in the state representation and foster a stronger national inclusion.”

In the presidential rotation issue, the Governor argues that allowing all areas of fair opportunity to lead the country will promote national unity and cohesion.

“Presidential rotation is a step needed to provide every part of the country a sense of ownership and representatives in national leadership,” he said.

Governor Mbah also made a case for gender equality, advocating affirmative actions through the creation of additional legislative seats for women.

Turning to security, he reiterated the urgent need for state police, describing it as “unable to be negotiated” given the deteriorating state security situation.

“If you look at the security situation that cannot be overcome in this country today, empowering the state through the creation of state police has become a necessity,” Mbah said. “This is a position agreed by most states.”
