Global human supervisor, Amnesty International, has condemned the alleged use of deadly power by the Nigerian military against members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) during the peaceful procession in Abuja.
The group began the procession of the Abuja 2025 International Quds Day to support the Palestinian government and to protest the silence of the Nigerian government over the crisis between Israel and Palestine.
However, the protest caused confrontation with security operators, where at least five protesters were killed and dozens were seriously injured.
In a statement issued on Sunday by the director of his country, Isa Sanusi, Amnesty International deplored that while the protest of Quds was held peacefully in several Nigerian cities, including canoe, Yola, Bauchi, Zaria, and Jos, violence only erupted in Abuja.
The group said it was a disturbing pattern that security operators continued to use excessive strength to IMN meetings for many years.
Sanusi refers to certain incidents in December 2015 when the army killed 350 members of the IMN in Zaria and tried to cover up the crime.

He also quoted AI’s investigation from October 2018, which found that excessive power by the army and the police caused death at least 45 IMN supporters in Abuja.
“Our research stipulates that the Nigerian military deliberately uses tactics designed to kill every time they deal with the IMN meeting,” Sanusi said.
“The extra execution of the law of IMN members gradually normalized as an annual bloodshed routine by Nigerian security forces.”
The organization said that in the last five years, they had documented video recordings and witnesses’ testimonies consistently showed that the Nigerian military distinguishes a peaceful IMN meeting by firing direct ammunition without warning.
“Every year, Amnesty International collects shocking and unreasonable proof of use from the deadly power of the army and police against IMN members.
“International law is clear that the security forces demonstrations should not use firearms against protesters. They may not use firearms to dissolve demonstrations, even if it turns into violence.
“Firearms should not be used as a tactical tool for demonstration management; they can only be used to save other lives.
“The eradication of violence against the IMN protectors cannot be justified and unacceptable. The protesters are entitled to carry out religious processions and protests.
“There is no evidence that they are a threat that will occur.
